I was very happy to read your post about the Benchcraft benches.I have built two benches (one from Tate Frid’s article in FWW, and one from Frank Klaus’ article in PW). While I like both, I

‘ think the vices can be a PITA.

I’m get a little long in the tooth and don’t really want to build another bench (been there, done that, got the tee shirt) . But been thinking about the Benchcraft bench for some time. Thank’s for the comments.

Regarding your August comments about “being a BoyScout”, I am old enough to remember when that was a complement.

That's a great idea. All the debris on the lower shelf drives me crazy and is a PITA to clean.

That ramping action to turn it into a backstop looks so nice and convenient.

Oh I am so with you on the gap. The amount of crap that falls down there is monumental. Plus pencils, scribing knives, all seem to have a force field drawing them in. I made my fix with two levels of a planing stop. I use the 1/4 height the most. People ask me what my favorite tool is? It’s this bench! I screwed up a connector bolt by cross threading it. I called them up and asked if I could purchase one, my fault, happy to pay whatever. They asked a few questions about it, then said they would ship it free, what’s my address. Yep my favorite tool.

It's kinda hard to see in that video, but referring back to your previous post on this bench, it looks as though you've not yet added a planing stop?! If so, have you found that with the wagon vise you don't/won't need to? Or more a matter of not yet having gotten round to 't?

Not asking for a friend, I hasten to add; as you know, my bench has both a stop and a wagon vise, and I'm very happy that's so; just curious as to your thoughts/reactions now that the bench has clearly seen some use?!

Cheers and all best,

Mattias

Hahahahaha. As if I move that quickly on two fronts. Nope – no planing stop yet. I've just been using one of the dogs as a stop for narrow pieces, and the tail vise as needed for wider pieces. (I also have an L-shaped appliance that clamps into the leg vise and extends across the width of the bench on top, for when I have to plane _really_ wide stock)

Let us know when you start adding more holdfast holes, and where you put them and why. I've been hesitant to drill additional holes in mine, but it definitely would benefit from a few more. I've added only one, in the back right corner to use the carver's vise.

Hmmm... I haven't yet found the need for more, but if/when I do, I'm sure I'll write about it.
